Play Tic Tac Toe Online

Tic-Tac-Toe — also searched as XO, Noughts and Crosses, and Xs and Os — is the two-player 3×3 grid game most people already know. Open the board in your browser, take turns placing X and O, and try to line up three marks before your opponent does.

No download, no account, no waiting. Play a round against the built-in AI when you want to practice, or invite a friend for a quick head-to-head.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe

  • The board is nine empty squares in a 3×3 grid.
  • X usually goes first. Players alternate, placing one mark per turn in any empty square.
  • Get three of your marks in a row — across, down, or diagonally — and you win.
  • If every square is filled and nobody has three in a row, the round is a draw (sometimes called a cat's game).

Click or tap an empty square to place your mark. That's the whole control scheme, on a phone or a computer.

Rules Players Often Miss

  • You cannot skip a turn or play two marks in a row.
  • A mark stays where you put it. Nothing moves or gets removed.
  • There is no extra point for a diagonal. Any three-in-a-row ends the round immediately.
  • A full board with no line is a draw, not a win for the player who placed the last mark.

Tic Tac Toe Strategy: How to Win (or Never Lose)

Tic-Tac-Toe is a solved game. With perfect play from both sides, every round ends in a draw. Most people do not play perfectly, so a short priority list is enough to stop losing and start winning the mistakes.

  • Win first. If you already have two in a line and the third square is empty, take it.
  • Block second. If your opponent has two in a line, stop them before you chase your own attack.
  • Take the center when you can. The middle square sits on four winning lines — more than any other square — so it is the strongest default opening.
  • Prefer corners over edges. A corner sits on three winning lines; an edge sits on two. Corners also set up forks.
  • Look for a fork. A fork is one move that creates two winning threats at once. Your opponent can block only one, so the other wins the round.
  • Play for the draw when you must. Against a careful opponent, mistake-free defense is the correct result — not a failed attack.

If you go second and they opened in a corner, take the center. If they opened in the center, take a corner. Edge openings leave more traps; treat them as the weakest first move unless you already know the fork patterns.

Play vs AI or a Friend

Use the AI when you want to test the checklist above. Use a friend when you want a faster, messier round. Both modes run on the same clean 3×3 board in the browser.

Tic Tac Toe FAQ

Is Noughts and Crosses the same as Tic-Tac-Toe?
Yes. Noughts and Crosses is the usual name in British and Commonwealth English. Xs and Os is common in Canada and Ireland. XO is the short label many players use for the same 3×3 game.

Can you always win at Tic-Tac-Toe?
No. Perfect play from both sides always draws. You win when the other player misses a block or walks into a fork.

What is the best first move?
The center is the most valuable square. A corner is the next-best open if the center is gone, and it is the move most likely to create a fork if the second player answers poorly.

Who goes first?
There is no single worldwide rule, but X conventionally starts. Going first is a small real advantage — five marks versus four if the board fills.

Do I need to download anything?
No. The game runs in the browser. No app, no account, no sign-in.

A Quick Classic for Any Gap in the Day

A round takes about a minute. That is why Tic-Tac-Toe still shows up in search as a coffee-break game: simple rules on the surface, a solved puzzle underneath, and just enough room for someone to slip.
