How to play Connect Four

The board has 7 columns and 6 rows. Players take turns: you pick a column, and your disc drops into the lowest open cell. The first player to line up four discs of their color horizontally, vertically, or diagonally wins. If the board fills with no line of four, the game is a draw.

You will also see this game called Connect 4 or four in a row.

Three ways to play

Vs the bot. Three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Easy is good for learning the rules. Hard looks several moves ahead, so beating it takes real planning.

Two players on one device. Pass the phone, tablet, or computer back and forth and take turns on the same screen.

Online with a friend. Create a room and send your friend an invite link or room code, or show a QR code if they are nearby. There is no random matchmaking: you only play people you invite.

A few tips

• Take the center column early: more winning lines run through it than through the edges.
• Before every move, check whether your opponent already has three in a row with an open cell next to it.
• Watch the diagonals. They are the easiest threats to miss.
• Do not drop a disc directly under a cell your opponent needs to win. They will take it on the next turn.
