Games

Math games online don't have to mean homework. This category is for teens and adults who enjoy a good number puzzle: games where numbers are the pieces and logic is the move. Sudoku, 2048 and Sumagi are all free, run in your browser with no download or sign-up and work on a phone as well as on a computer.

There are no worksheets, grade levels or drills, just number puzzles that are easy to start and hard to put down once a grid starts to click. Whether you have two minutes or twenty, pick one and play.

Sudoku: logic with numbers, not arithmetic

You never add anything in Sudoku; you just place 1 to 9 so that no digit repeats in a row, column or 3×3 box. Five levels take you from Easy to Master, and hints name the technique to use instead of filling in the answer. If you can count to nine, you can play; the challenge is pure reasoning.

2048: merging powers of two

2048 is the merge puzzle built on powers of two. Every swipe slides all the tiles on a 4×4 board at once, and matching numbers combine: 2 and 2 make 4, 4 and 4 make 8, all the way up to 2048. The real skill is planning ahead and keeping your biggest tile in a corner, and Slice Games adds Swap and Bomb moves for when the board gets tight.

Sumagi: sum puzzles

Sumagi is a sum puzzle made by Slice Games. Each grid gives you a target, and you connect neighboring numbers, up, down, left or right, into one path that adds up to that total exactly. It's genuine mental addition combined with route planning, because the numbers have to add up and connect. Early grids are gentle, while later ones make you weigh several routes before you commit to one.

What these games train

Mostly number sense and planning, in a relaxed way:

  • spotting patterns
  • thinking a few moves ahead
  • keeping running totals in your head

They're puzzles first, not lessons, so they're also fine for older kids who like a challenge. No timer pushes you, so you think at your own pace. Everything plays on a phone, tablet or computer, and your unfinished Sudoku is saved in your browser. Want logic without the numbers? Try Brain Games, home to Minesweeper and the Sequence Game.
