About

What Is Spyfall and How Do You Play Online?

Spyfall is a bluffing game built around one simple trick: everyone in the group knows the same secret location — a beach, a submarine, a circus — except for one player, the Spy, who has no idea where they are. Players take turns asking each other questions about the location. Answer too vaguely and you look suspicious. Answer too specifically and you might hand the Spy exactly what they need. Meanwhile, the Spy is doing the opposite job: asking careful, low-risk questions and listening for clues, hoping to work out the location before anyone catches on.

Slice Games runs this for you online, so you don't need a deck of location cards or a physical timer. Set up a room, bring your group in, and the game handles dealing roles and keeping things moving.

Location Mode vs. Word Mode

Slice Games includes two ways to play. In location mode — the classic Spyfall setup — everyone gets the same place, and the Spy gets nothing at all, forcing them to guess blind. In word mode, instead of a shared location, most players get the same secret word while the odd one out gets a different, related word, and has to bluff their way through a conversation about it without being obvious. It's a related but distinct style of play: the location version is about pinpointing a place through indirect questions, while the word version is closer to a fast game of "who doesn't actually know the word." Switch between them depending on what your group is in the mood for.

How to Play a Round

  1. Start a room and get everyone in — no app or download needed, just a browser.
  2. Roles are dealt automatically: everyone gets the location (or word), except the Spy.
  3. Take turns asking and answering questions about the location or word, one player at a time.
  4. At any point, someone can call for a vote if they think they've spotted the Spy.
  5. The Spy can also break cover early and try to guess the location or word outright.
  6. Reveal the roles, see who was right, and start the next round.

Tips for Asking Better Questions

Most rounds are won or lost on question quality, not luck.

  • If you're not the Spy: ask something specific enough to sound like you belong, but avoid naming exact objects or actions that only make sense in that one location.
  • If you're not the Spy: pay attention to answers that are oddly generic — a real answer usually has a small, natural detail in it.
  • If you're the Spy: ask open questions about mood, purpose, or people rather than objects — "would you bring kids here?" gives you more to work with than "what color is the wall?"
  • If you're the Spy: don't rush a guess. A wrong guess usually ends the round for you immediately.

Who Is Spyfall Good For?

It works well for casual groups who want a game that starts in seconds and doesn't need anyone to read a rulebook first. Larger groups tend to make the Spy's job harder, since there are more questions and more people to read, while smaller groups play faster and feel more personal. It's equally suited to a quick round between other activities or a full game night built around several rounds back to back.

FAQ

How many players do you need?
Spyfall works with small groups, but it gets more interesting as you add players — more questions means more chances for the Spy to slip up, and more suspects for the Spy to hide among.

Do I need to download anything?
No. Slice Games runs Spyfall directly in your browser.

What's the difference between location mode and word mode?
Location mode is the traditional Spyfall setup, where the Spy has no information at all and must guess a shared place. Word mode gives the odd player out a different but related word instead of a location, which changes how the bluffing plays out.

Can the Spy still win after being suspected?
Yes — the Spy can guess the location or word at any point before being voted out, which is often their best shot if they're running out of time.
